Religion in China

In this Campaign Setting, I have extrapolated the real religions of this time period into this setting in replacement of the dieties of the core rule books. I am not a a religious historian so I have taken some liberties to make them useable  This will be a quick overview of the choices that will be present,

Folk Religion

This religion is common among the populace, it is focused mostly on ancestor and deceased figures. There are gods and demons for all types of people , so most people will engage in some of the ceremonies of this religion even if they follow another one.

Buddhism

A religion focused primarily on the perfection of self in order to reach Nirvana or Enlightenment, which is basically reaching the point where 'self' does not exist. They have a large element of monastic culture, so much so that the western concept of the martial monk is primarily from Buddhism.

Confucianism

Less a religion but more of a philosophy, Confucianism is obviously based on the writings of Confucius. His words encouraged readers to practice self-restraint, with an emphasis on honor, legalism and learning.

Taoism

Taoism encompasses many different approachs, but in Literature it is usually depicted as the masters of the Elements and magic in general. They also have a significant Monastic culture, but with generally smaller organizations than Buddhism .

Way of Supreme Peace

The way of Peace was a Taoist Sect formed by Zhang Jue, a healer by trade, a thousand years prior as reaction to the corruption of the empire. Officials noticed Zhang Jue's influence but their attempts at arresting him led to a full scale rebellion with his followers. This "Yellow Turban Rebellion" as it became known, was a failure, but it inspired many other revolts all through today.
